Default Coolant Question

New to the forum....but I have a problem (on a Sunday) of course! Ibought a used 1998 Audi A6 Quattro. The "Coolant Level" light has started coming on after I drive for 10 minutes. I stopped at a service station and they didn't think it looked low. But when I checked it this morning with a cold engine...it is slightly below the minimum level line. Can I buy Audi coolant (this is pink) at a local auto parts store today? And if it is not an exact match...will that be a problem? I have no idea what the type is that is in the resevoir now. Also...can I add water to the coolant...and if so...how much?? Thank you.....

You need to get the coolant from the dealer. I suggest just waiting until tomorrow and stopping by the VW or Audi dealer and getting a jug of coolant from them to be safe.

the coolant is a mixture of antifreeze so dosnt count when topping up, G12 red is the norm but I would recommend topping up with water to see if the light goes out then consider doing a coolant change if required

Thank you both for your help. Does the coolant definitely need to be CHANGED? Or just added to bring the level up??

just add water to see if the warning light comes on and then decide if a coolant needs a change, go into a garage and ask them to test the coolant viscosity they have the tools and should do it free

Answeringyour question - "Prestone" is making thecollant that you can safely mix with Audi's original fluid, go to any Local Auto Zoneand ask there.
