Default CV boot function?

Hey guys ive got a cracked CV boot. I am a novice when it comes to the DIY stuff and pretty much a car in general. So i was just wondering what is the function or point of the CV boots? Thanks!

To hold thecv joint grease inside the cv joint or rezzepa joint. If the grease comes out the joint starts drying out the outer joint startes heating up and you will see it on the joint when the steel gets superheated it will leave blue marks on the joint where the steel ***** are inside the joint. It will eventually start clicking when you turn and or clunking, maybe lock up if left alone for a long time.

You will notice grease on the inside of your wheel if the CV boot is torn, maybe even some squeaky brakes.
