Default did I just get hosed?

Wondering if you guys mighttake a look (below) the list of parts I bought from my local repairshop and tell me if I got hosed on the pricing? I'm thinking about calling them, but wanted to make sure I'm comparing apples to apples. Thanks. Joe

Parts listMy CostAvg. Internet cost
1. 1- K&N Air filter (33-2125) $129.99$55.00
2. 6- Denzo spark plugs (Iridium Power IK20)$32.99/each $13.99/each
3. 6- Spark plug boots (#7003030) $26.28/each$5.50 each
4. 1- Bosch Fuel filter(#G3747) $48.99 $15.99
5. 7- Mobile One Oil (0W-30)$14.99/each$7.00
6. 1- Bosch Oil filter$12.99 $6.99

Total Cost for Parts $652.52
Labor $195.00

Total cost: $859.96

OMG...

You can get Mobil 1 for under $6 a quart. Why are they using 0-w30 anyway?

It's sad to think that is almost as much as I paid to get my whole timing belt job done... Sorry man, but you just got raped hardcore...

I'm just curious.....did it hurt when they bent you over like that?

I fully expect a shop to make someprofit on parts but a 500% markup on spark plug boots? A 300% markup on a fuel filter? 200% on an air filter, oil filter, and a quart of oil?

That is simply asinine....frankly I wouldn't bother to call the shop as those are most likely theirrates, but I would start shopping around for a new place to take your Audi - because those guys are NOT looking out for your best interests. My shop does add some money for parts as well, but only about 20% higher than I could purchase them myself. There is enough competition out there so I wouldn't think twice about finding another place to go if they decided to start charging me 200% markup on parts.

It does seem high. Of course, like any business, they have to make a profit on the parts they stock and/or resell. I would also expect them to stand behind these parts and if they fail, replace them at no charge.

I have a working agreement with my local indie that I supply Mobil1 and he supplies the filter - an oil change is about $20. He has supplied parts for my clutch/flywheel and brake work; I supplied them for the timing belt work. His comment is that if parts he supplies fail within warranty, he replaces them no charge for parts or labor. If I supply them, he has to charge. So to a certain extent, the extra cost is insurance. However the stuff you listed is not big ticket and easy to replace.

It's always to your advantage to have the "what will it cost" discussion before you have the work done, rather than after. If you bounced this off the forum before, we could have saved you a lot of pain.

Your guy missed the opportunity to stick you $100 for a $30 cabin air filter. See, it could have been worse.

I think you knew the answer to that question before you even asked. Find an enthusiast recommended shop in your locale.

Yea. I was afraid this might be the outcome. I stillplan to call the shop, because I've taken my cars there for some time now and would like to give them a chance to do right by me. Let it be known that I totally understand companies need to make a profit (and in some cases justifiably more then normal), but it really does seem that these guys took me to the cleaners at every turn.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Awww Man, I'm sorry they did you like that. I have a 2000 2.7 and I did most of those repairs myself.

I paid:
1. K&N filter- $43
2. Denso Iridium Plugs-$61 for 6 plugs with free shipping
3. Mann Fuel Filter- $20.75
4. Mann Oil Filter- $9.89
5. 7 Quarts of Mobile One Extended Performance 5w-30- $39
6. 6 Bosch spark plug boots- $60 with free shipping.

I spent less than $240 on parts with no labor cost. All the stuff was easy to do. Just took a little time. The Great Guys on this site can help you with any repair questions you can think of. Good luck from now on. Watch that shop or you probably will be paying $100 for a $30 filter like ppgoal said.
