Default Difference in A and B vin# for C5s

When I look up parts, I see there's some sort of difference between parts for cars with the 8th letter either being a "A" or "B". Does anyone know what the actual difference between the cars is?

the 4-8 letter of the vin are
body, engine, restraint, and series.

USUALLY the B is for audi a6 98-(01-04?)
the A is for the generation before ours. 95-97.

so if you have a c5 chassis you want B. the A series used a 12V 2.8 and B used a 30V 2.8.

Thanks for the info. I just thought it was odd that the A and the B are both a choice when I'm looking for parts for my 98 A6. I'm guessing that there was a model split between early 98 and late 98?
