Default downpipes

ok so im looking into getting my downpipes done. first i know everyone talks about the vast piggies as being a cheaper and still a good way to go. what im wondering is what exactly is the vast piggie. because my mechanic fabricates muscle cars and can just do it for me. he has the plugs and other things to relocate the 02 sensors. what im wondering is what does vast do to the downpipes. gut the precat? do they make the piping and bigger? or put a highflow cat on it? and if so what kind? what im wondering though is if i have a 2.5" catback what is the point of only have a 2" or w/e the stock diameter is for the downpipe. your exhaust only flows as fast as the most restrictive point. anyone have info? it would be appreciated
