ECU Chip upgrade

ok say what you want about me being a noob or whatever but im having a hell of a time figuring out if I want to get a ecu upgrade do I have to ship off my ecu or can I do it myself?

Generally chipping an A6 means removing the ECU and sending it to GIAC or APR. I am not aware of any software only upgrades since I only looked at the previous two.
