Default Engine stalls

Hi
Car is 99 A6 2.8Q Auto/Tip

Idles at around 600 - is this normal?

The engine will stall and car has to be restarted. Have to wait a few minutes to start the car as it will not start straight away following the cut.
Dealer had a diagnostic on it and it pointed to the Coolant Temparature Sensor being faulty. Had this replaced and car still idles low but has not yet cut-out again.

I have also had the belt changed recently and problem only happened following this. A tech mentioned that the timing may be out - is this possible? Could this cause the cut?

All help greatly appreciated.

Timing is set via the ECU so shouldn't be out, i'd look at the Idle control valve, not sure how it works on the 2.8 but i'm sure somebody else will.

The 30 Valve 2.8 does not have an idle control valve.

Default RE: Engine stalls

Hi

Still at a loss here. Engine start on cold is fine. When car reaches normal operating temperature, the idle dips to around 500rpm. If I switch the car off and try to restart, it starts - revs shoot up to around 2000rmp for about 10seconds then dip to around 1000rpm. Move the shift to drive and the car stalls!
Any info really appreciated as the UK dealers are a rip.
Thanks

Default RE: Engine stalls

i'm having the same problem on my 99 A6 2.8Q.

it idles at about 500-600. used VAG to increase the RPMto the maximum setting, it is still at under 600RPM.

when the car is in 'Drive', the RPM drops to below 400, and dies when you cometo a stop. I have to drive with one foot on gas and one on brake.

is there any way I can manually increase the RPM???? thanks
