My 2006 A6 3.2 FWD sometimes get the EPC light in the dash, when that is on, I can't shift out of park unless I press a "hidden button" under the ashtray. When this happens, my cruise control doesn't work, and although I can still shift into drive, the LED screen light that shows whether you are in P/R/N/D/S doesn't illuminate showing it is in drive.

What might cause this?

 

A faulty brake light switch can cause this. Have your ECM scanned specifically with some VAG tool. You will probably find that there is a stored code for a faulty brake light switch. Let us know the verdict once you have the car checked.
