Default flashing panel in dashboard

ello,

got in to 98 audi on friday morn everything fine, finished work lunchtime and led/lcd bit in center of dash started flashing randomly, got home and went out in evening switch ignition on and still flashing,
now when i press button under wiper stalk to switch off nowt happens, when it came on for about a second i managed to press button quick enough and it then switched off.

switched it on next day it flashed few times and the it was ok for next few days,

tonight it started flashing again and it annoying when dark
only thing that fiddled with in that area was middle of last year when had new ignition switched fitted but no probs

i not vagged it yet as my bet it wont show anything,
what I have noticed is when it flashing and managed to fully light up the OK light shows as it does when you switch ignition on (engine already running)
other thing is when i managed to switch the dispay off if i switch the ignition ON, i get the OK light come on for usual time and goes off (no flashing) (remember display is swiched off) and yes i know ok still lights up on ignit switch on

as ok warning light fine and on for right lenth of time it hard to try suss out whats going on, i.e if it a short i would assume the OK light would flash but it dont, it will only flash if display is switched on,

any ideas ????????????

ok it started bleepin like hell at me tonight but screen not on long enough to see what is was. Eventualy when it did stay on for 2 secs it was warning that washer bottle running low, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr gave me a headache now,

Anyway. it gotta be power problem i've noticed that when it plays up it looses info like average speed, travel time ec t...........

so it not directly the display but power getting to what ever computer that controls the display,

anyone know where it is? and plz dont say built into dash

addition, i started pulling fuses out as well, found the right one (15 i think) and that kills lcd off BUT it kills power to whole dash need wiring diagam to locate where power goes as fuse serves 4 ac circuits

interesting...i don't think i've ever heard of that happening. definitely sounds like it might be either a corrosion issue or something shorting out though.

manual diags (fault finiding) gonna be right pain, so far today it flashed couple times but been ok.

to find it, it gotta flash so i can check circuits, it intermittent so could take a while, i'll fiddle around with connections and stuff to see if can trigger it off again,

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr as said i like a challange BUT wish it would cont flicker or not at all, if connection prob somewhere you can bet after checking few hundred cables bet it one of the last ones (as always is)

ok done manual test inside VAG (17 instruments) you can do lcd test where it lights whole screen up (segment test) as screen is pretty damn good,

ALSO. playing with the analog clocks in the test, i was amused to see dialls go to 8k rpm and over 160 MPH with a full tank of fuel and engine temp of 120 and car didnt move an inch.

anyway, still looks like a supply problem, typical while running vag it behaved its self, it gonna be like that i think
