NH,

I always wotked under my cars on jackstands, too. I don't LIKE it. Good stands, too small a footprint, anyway. Gotta be careful, as Site says.

Then, if you're getting rounder in your advancing years, you DO gotta go up a notch. Shakier still.

My problem has always been that my 2 car garage is so full of wood and metal working machinery and the like that I have to pile stuff from the one side into the other to MAKE enough room to put the car in on jacks.

Anybody here who has enough aptitude, and I don't mean mechanical genius, the room to do it, and that can be a level driveway, a vehicle to use for maybe a few weeks, if it takes you that long, and the desire to do it, along with a good manual, whether on disc or on paper.

Oh, tools will help, too. You can buy those you don't have easily enough.

One that has been mentioned to Site is a tranny jack. A 2 X 6 or 4 x 4 across the fenders and a chain will support the rear of the engine when you get everything to the unbolt stage. I lifted mine into place with a floor jack, but that was front wheel drive. I would not like to try lifting this Quattro, about 4 foot long on a 5 inch or so floor jack pad.

Oh, NH?

I got tired of crawling under them a long time ago. But I had to keep 4 daughters cars running, + the wife's and my own. Couldn't quit. Got you beat, here, though. My kids live within 15 miles, the farthest, and my grands the same. 20 minutes max to visit the farthest. Bummed this week, tho', youngest went to Niagara, so the grandbabies are outa site for 5 days. Granddaughter (Senior) is playing Varsity Soccer starting this week, so that helps a bit.

(You younger guys can just ignore this stuff. Don't want a couple to bitch "they shouldn't be allowed to talk about that stuff on an AUDI FORUM!!!")

Cheers,

George

Site admin, since you have rebuilt your exact tranny, what special tools did you use? did you have to take the did and read drive gears i.e differential carriers off? where did you get the torque converter replaced? Thanks

I don't think he has posted in quite some time. I printed out the info on the rebuild though and he has a thread on here that goes into great detail of where he got parts etc.

www.transindustries.com for the rebuild kit

www.astg.com for the ZF manual (you need your model no.)

He sent the torque converter out to Tennessee to a company called Dacco of Detroit. They rebuilt it for him and sent it back.

FYI, I found out that the Audi fluid is ESSO and ESSO is manufactured by Mobil. If that means anything.

Thank you for the links. I found that Dacco has a master rebuild kit for this tranny for $550 bt Precision transmissions. I am not sure where to buy after market kit or stick to the ZF.

Well if Site Admin reads this I'll give HIM $2,000 and he can rebuild mine! Just give me the address and it will show up in your drive way - either that or I'm gonna put it on the train tracks and see how far the train drags it.

Default Similar Tranny Issue

I am a new member to the forum.

Having similar issue with transmission. Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, all other gears seem fine. Mechanic noted that fluid was "dark", smelled burnt and contained metal particles. The CPU is not throwing any transmission error codes. When I asked about flushing the fluid they suggested $4,500.00 transmission rebuild/update stating that, in his experience, the fluid and particles actually help the transmission if it is failing. Based on two subsequent conversations, in addition to this thread, I decided to replace the fluid and filter first.

Drained as much fluid as I could at ambient temp, following the suggestions posted by zippy_gg. It took 8 quarts of fluid however when shifting the car to reverse the torque converter pushed out some of the old fluid so I know I didn't remove it all. Took the car out for a test drive. It shifted fine until the engine and tranny warmed up then it started acting up again.

Any suggestions or thoughts on next steps?

Thank you in advance.

Year late but what the heck. I just had to yank the tranny out of my A8 and rebuild it. Just like the previous posts, got the parts from transtar, frictions and had a local guy rebuild the TC, $150. You can pull and rebuild the tranny yourself, you need a couple tools but they can be bought at Sears or wherever you get your tools. Motor comes down when you get the subframe out and can be supported from the bottom. I used a couple of jack stands, some 2x4's pieces and some 2x6 planks and trust me, it was stable and worked well, my car is back on the road. Some stuff you can fabricate yourself instead of buying the expensive audi tools, you'll just need to look it up. The tranny will come apart and be fixed, for me, I needed a new clutch drum and clutch disks, I think they were a few bucks a piece, I needed 12 of them, front seal, filter and fluid. I use the mobil 1 and no problems. Be careful with the torx heads, they strip easy, however, when you're pulling the oil pump you can drill those out and replace them. In your case Jeeps I think there might be a problem with the valve body. I think, although it's a year later, you should not drive it like that. I've read that there is a weak spot in the valve body that puts too much pleasure to the A -drum and when the A-drum get's too much pleasure, the OEM drum will break and you'll get limp mode and have to rebuild your whole tranny like I had to do. Unfortunately shop will charge you an arm and a leg to do that because it's an Audi, but once you get to the nuts and bolts of it, it's the same as any other tranny, nothing magical about it. Huuh, like ZF tranny builders are little Einsteins, well, if they were Einsteins in the first place they wouldn't have built a gigantic transmission for a sedan that sucks *****, so whatever....

Its amazing how he rebuilt the transmission, but didn't know how to refill the fluid. Before I would even begin to take a transmission apart I would want to know how to make sure I have the correct amount of fluid in the transmission, since I at least know that transmission fluid is a big part of how a transmission works...
