This is wierd!
02 2.7T A6 6 spd 88K
1. About 3 weeks ago stopped for gas fill and engine wouldnt start. Plenty of cranking power. After 1 hour it started and ran fine. (full tank)
2 . 2 weeks ago after a quick left then right manuver, the engine shut off and after 1 hour it started and ran fine. (3/4 full tank)
3. 1 week ago, a quik left turn, the engine shut off and after 1 hour it started and ran fine. (1/4 full tank)
4. Today the car was idling for 20 minutes to reduce the fuel level prior to pulling the pump and the engine shut off when i slammed the LR door closed. It wouln't start until I waited 1 hour.

Am I on the right track to replace the pump or could it be something else?

 

It might not be bad idea to check the fuel pressure & see if that is indeed your problem. It can get expensive throwing parts at cars without a little diagnostic trouble shooting.
Is the check engine light on? Are there any faults/pending faults?

Try banging on the fuel tank next time it happens & see it starts working.
