Default "FUSE" Displayed in Trip Odometer?

I posted this basic scenario in a different thread but made some discoveries that change some of the original posting so here it is again with a fresh perspective:

2000 A6 4.2 had the battery symbol in the center cluster come on and the volt meter dropped to full discharge (around 6v but not at the peg). The trip odometer says 'FUSE'. The alternator itself is putting 14.x volts to the battery and the car is running fine with full electric power. Two other symptoms are 1) The clock and calendar reset each time I start the car and 2) the illumination on the AC controls are dim.

Has anyone seen something like this? Thanks!
