Default Gearbox toasted? A6 V6 2.6 auto

Help...(please)
'96 A6 Avant Auto - last week refused to change up from 3rd to 4th otherwise changed up and down ok. On advice checked gearbox oil - level seemed ok, but on draining oil came out black not pink.
Refilled as best I could - 'box now has a noticeable 'clunk' and jerks when engaging forward or reverse gears.

Talked to dealer today to enquire about filter/gasket for oil refill and was told shouldn't touch it - when I explained the black oil symptom, dealer said give up, gearbox is toast, waste of money to even diagnose.
Not interested in a rebuild as not worth it, but not keen on scrapping nearly $3k worth of car.

Any tips? Thanks Neil

it changes gear so that's a + what oil did you use for the transmission?? definitely consider the filter change in the tranny as the dealer/garage always looks for the highest profit margin, black atf fluid doesnt always mean the tranny is shot but in most cases it needs a service

got the Dexron III ATF fluid made by Total (allI can get in France) - dealer wouldn't even 'sell me' parts - does it need a special gasket/filter or should I start by taking the pan off and cleaning down anyway? Did a top-up a year ago with a similar problem and run fine for 10k miles so not giving up too easily...

hard to say because the book says VW-ATF so not sure what you have put in there, gasket can be reused because its rubber and filter is a simple change and inexpensive but you know what garages will say ( money makes their business go round )DIY I think
