Have Engine and Tranny Out, What to replace?
I have a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T with 165,000 miles
I had to get my Engine/Transmission out because of a transmission oil leak from inside the bellhousing. Anyways, I took it out together, and am wondering since the car is wide open and engine/tranny are wide open to work on what else I should change for maintenance, and to make the car feel new again...
I am definitely doing the timing belt kit, engine mounts, tranny mounts, snub mount, powersteering hoses... What else can I change that will be difficult to change with the engine and transmission in the car and are things that will likely break soon since I'm at 165k miles?
I'd really appreciate suggestions.
(for instance, should I change the engine rear main seal? flywheel? hoses anywhere?)
I'm also going to gut the precats.. Do I need to get new gaskets or will the old ones be fine? What about the rear driveshaft gasket, do I need to replace that?
Oh and I'm keeping my stock turbos until they blow.

i am doing the same thing. here is what i've done:
-alternator
-starter
-engine seal kit
-turbo hardware kit
-gutted dp's, removed heat shields and added heat wrap
-valve cover kit
-fan clutch
-vacuum line to silicone ones
-oil cooler, power steering and tranny lines
-engine/tranny/snub/sub-frame mounts and bushings
-all new fluids
-rear main seal
these helped:

cool thank you,
is it better to heat wrap the exhaust instead of using the heat shields? why exactly did you do that?
when you remember more of the maintenance things please tell me. thanks a lot for the ones so far. :-)

the stock heat shields are a bitch to work with and i didnt want to deal with them again. in my opinion heat wrap does the job just as well. i also wrapped my exhaust manifolds. the engine bay i wrapped in the gold heat wrap from jegs as well.
a couple other things i have done while the engine has been out:
-blue lower temp sensor
-coil packs
-new exhaust clamps
-egt's
-spark plugs
-new axle bolts

wow, i forgot to disconnect the torque converter when I pulled out the transmission. but I guess you can do that since it comes out freely from the transmission. But then! OMG the 3 torq bolts holding the torque converter where crazy! I had to use 2 breaker bars, 1 to hold the crankshaft in place wedged against some stuff. then to get the bolts out another breaker bar. crazy. engine floating in the air on the hoist. what a day.
