The HID units are low beam only and replace the H1 low beam bulbs in a conventional system. Both systems use an H7 bulb for high beams. If you remove the cover on the back of one of the headlight units, you can see the low and high beam connections. The HID low beam connection is a horseshoe-shaped plastic unit (with a high voltage warning sticker) that's linked to an igniter via a piece of rubber tubing. The conventional H1 low beam just uses a standard blade wire connector.

Just make sure that option is on your list when you're shopping. You'll know you picked a good store when one of the things the salesman does is to demo the options you're looking for. I don't know, but I'll bet all the options for particular car are listed in the Audi system software under the vehicle identification number (VIN).
