I've had my 2002 Audi 3.0 A6 for about 2 months now, and it seems like there is a LOT of excessive head coming from the engine compartment/front wheel area of the car.

I popped open the hood and the plastic molding near the air intake was very hot. And this is after the car had been driven pretty lightly for about 5 miles or so.

Also, there was a slight smell of melting plastic.

Is this unusual? It just doesnt seem right to me.

 

Is your engine overheating? If not I think you are just overly concerned. After 5 miles your engine is hot no matter how lightly you drive.

Smell of melting plastic...I don't know, but I think your car is just fine unless there is obvious melting plastic or your engine is overheating.

I know what it is like to be paranoid when it comes to owning an Audi(any European car that is).
