Default Help! Blue Smoke out Exhaust and Oil out the Dipstick hole

Brand new member of your forum. Have an '02 2.7T A6 with 120M miles. Had the strangest thing happen. Noticed blue smoke coming out exhaust when I started it the other day. Driving into town had blue smoke billowing out the exhaust like an old truck. Pulled over and when I pulled my dip stick there was oil coming out that hole. Drove it home thinking I had destroyed my engine but as I got home the smoke stopped. Let it cool down and started it and it was fine. Took to a foriegn car shop that works on Audi's and they couldn't find anything wrong with it (of course). Anyone have any ideas. I'm religious about changing oil (myself) every 7500 miles with synthetic oil. Never seen anything like this.

Thanks! Kurt

You can't pull the dipstick with the engine running. The crank case is pressurized and should push oil out the tube.

I would think it could be a problem with the heads, gasket, seals or cracks.
or something with the secondary air system pushing oil into the intake.

Thanks Jackmup. Car was actually shut off when I pulled the dipstick, but that's good info as I didn't know the crankcase was pressurized. I'm used to working on old British cars that aren't as sophisticated as the Audi's. Curious as to what and where the secondary air system is. There is a small round unit in front of the brake master cyl and washer fluid container that has been giving off an intermitant buzzing sound. When I asked the shop what it was and if that was normal, they weren't even sure what it was, which makes me question how good they are with Audi's. Any ideas what that is and if the buzzing is normal. Thanks! Kurt

Are you thinking of the oil tank for the power steering?

In the winter I often notice a little "smoke" out the exhausts, but it is more condensation color rather than dark blue oil smoke. Check your antifreeze and make sure no oil is in there (head, gasket) and no white gunk on your dipstick (sign of water in the oil). There is also a possiblility that a turbo leaked oil since they are oil cooled, but I have heard they tend to leak on the outside (like one of mine is doing) rather than the inside. Good luck and let us know if/when you find the root cause.

Chances are that your crankcase ventilation system is plugged, causing high pressure in the crankcase. Some of these cars need the hoses cleaned or replaced to prevent this.

If the engine was off the crankcase wouldn't be pressurized, so scratch that.

You said you were playing in the snow.

just driving or doing do-nuts?

I agree with oldmots, sounds like something to do with the PCV.

Thanks for your posts. Car has been running fine, so not sure what happened. Just curious, does the PCV have something to do with the crankcase ventilation? Maybe I should change the PCV just to play it safe. I'd like to start doing more on this car myself so I guess I better get a workshop manual. Had a shop change my plugs and paid over $300. After reading this forum I could have done it myself. One thing that does need fixed is my right valve cover is leaking onto exhaust manifold so I keep smelling burnt oil. As far as the round canister that is buzzing in the front left area of the engine compartment, I'll take a picture and post. And, yes, I wish I was out doing donuts in the snow. Thanks! Kurt

PCV = Positive- Crankcase- Ventilation

It not as simple as replacing a certain valve in these cars.

I know there is a check valve in the valley pan under the intake manifold that can go bad.

Also sludge and carbon build-up that can form in all of the vent hoses and parts.

Big job getting to all of that. Sea foam wouldn't of helped the amount of buildup in my engines.

magnaflow exhaust

A poor exhaust system makes the whole system to make very ugly and unpleasant noises when being driven. This is because their systems are spoiled and therefore the waste is not gotten rid of in a perfect way. Such sounds are very annoying and it may upset many individuals as it causes noise pollution to the environment. In order to avoid this, one should ensure that they have a proper exhaust system.
