Default Help-Oil Change

Feel dumb askings this but hear goes. I have 2002 a6 4.2. I just bought it and am changing the air filter/ fuel filter/ and oil and oil filter. Smart right? However is the oil pan the plasticish feeling ban below the engine near the belts with the what looks like a 12mm allen wrench? or is that something different. The fuel filter and air filter were easy,i guess i dont want to drain the wrong plug. which is the oil drain?

I don't mean to hi-jack the threat but, on a 98' A6 with a 2.8l V6 what type of oil and filter do I use? I used to always change the oil in my 91' MBZ 300e and am a bit intimidated by a new car. Should I just keep taking it to the dealership for a $89 oil change or do it myself?

Be very careful NOT to drain the transmission.
On my A6 2.7t I have to remove the belly pan under the engine to get to where I need to be to drain the oil and replace the filter. Not sure if it is the same on the 4.2 though...

General rule of thumb that i use on an unfamiliar vehicle is to always attempt to find where the trans meets the motor. Once you locate where they are you can tell what pan belongs to them. Hope this helps

Wow, sorry. God forbid you have to type in "xw-xx". Related to what the OP posted. Not like I'm asking what type of shocks do I use :S. And if I made a new thread I probably would of been scolded as well for asking something so simple and told to search yet I can't find the answer.

And for your information, the same has happened to me but we we're all cool at mbworld.org. I would post a question, and if someone else had another question related to mine we would all answer them. Doesn't mean you have to ignore the OP.
