For my car I didn't car about mileage.I have 165,xxx on my 96 Pearl white Avant. I looked at the maintinence of the car and the all around shape, plus the higher mileage ones can be in just as perfect shape as as low mileage one and be bought a couple grand less.

If I were you and were thinking about geting a 2002-03 I would try and look at ones with nothing higer than 120,000 and ofcourse the ones with the higher mileage will have to be rather cheaply priced. Also the things that go at lower miles is most of the time fixed all ready.

Um... different opinion here. I saw low mileage as one of THE criteria determining which car I went with. The 2.7T is an engine that benefits from "good rules of turbo ownership" (gentle warm up and cool down -- search for it and you'll find detailed explanations). As such, I wanted to be the person piling on the miles. I bought an '01 with 28k miles. Buying a car with 100k+ miles strikes me as a pretty big gamble.

Timing belt replacement (a $1k-1.5k task) is done somewhere between 75 and 90k. As such, I'd shoot to get under 40k. Should not be hard given that most leases are 4 yr/40k. Plenty coming off lease with that mileage.
