Default Ignition Woes

I own a 2000 A6 2.7T, with automatic transmission. I purchased the vehicle 15 years ago from the original owner and, for its age has relatively low mileage; 85,000. I drive the car about 5,000 miles a year. Approximately 2 months ago, and about 4-5 times since, when I attempt to start the engine, I turn the key to start the car and only the dashboard lights come on, the engine wont' crank and there's not even a "click". Nothing. I've tried taking out the key and re-inserting it, still nothing, I've also tried placing my foot on the brake pedal, still nothing. After several attempts at re-inserting the key (sometimes trying different keys), it has started. This is more than frustrating as my wife drives the car more frequently than I do, and she's been stranded a few times, miles away from home. I've had the car to a private garage that specializes in Audis, but they are at a loss. They've also run electronic diagnostics (more than once) and nothing turns up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
