Knocking noise when turning steering wheel
I just bought a 2008 Audi A6 3.2L quattro with 24,000 miles on it. I noticed a weird almost knocking noise when turning the steering wheel all the way to the right or to the left.
The dealer looked at the car and said that CV joints, suspension, power steering is all working fine. They did suggest to replace the sway bar links, but the car doesn't have any other symptoms of it having an issue with the sway bar.
I live in New England, and I've also noticed that the noise only occurs when the temperature gets pretty low - below 30 degrees, which has been often lately.
Any thoughts/recommendations? Thank you!

What a coincidence. I just had my '08 in for the 75k service and mentioned the same thing to the service advisor. I was worried that perhaps a ball joint was getting stiff. They heard the same thing and inspected the front suspension. They noted that the rubber bushings for the sway bar links were cracked and replaced both sides. They claim the problem is solved but it was in the 40's here in CT today. If you are at all handy you can probably change them yourself. I believe you can get them for about $95 each part number 4E0411317F. I had the dealer do the work under the extended warranty.

Thanks for the information. The Audi dealer offered to switch out the links for the sway bar for $924, but it's Massachusetts law that the dealer the car is bought from needs to cover repairs if the car is under 40,000 miles.
I've got an appointment with that dealer tomorrow, but I think I'm going to cancel because it's supposed to be on the warmer side and I'm afraid the issue won't be reproducible.
Anybody have other ideas? Thanks!
