Default Massive Billowing blue smoke...HELP!!!!

Dear Friends and Fellow Audi Owners.....

I have a 1999, 2.5 TDi A6 Avant with what appears to be a rather serious problem......

When i am idle or in v.slow moving traffic, there is billowing blue smoke coming from the exhaust. Once i get rolling again and into 3rd and 4th, up to speed like, the problem clears.....as long as i keep moving the smoke isnt there. When i floor it in 3rd and 4th etc there is NO big plume of cloud behind me.....it only happens when stationary or tickling along.....

I have been informed that this is less likely to be a piston rings problem and more likely to be something to do with the head and threads.....

Does anyone have an opinions on what the problem might be? I have a 1 yr old little boy and wife that are desperate for the use of the car that is currently at a garage awaiting further instructions....any help at all would be extremely appreciated......

many thanks in advance,

all the best........tom

I would say it's bad valve stems.
You're right about therings, since it would be blowing smoke while driving.
