Default Mpg problem

I have a 2004 Audi A6 2.7T S-Line. I just recently bought it with 45000 miles. I've been getting about 12 miles per gallon and I do not rod on it. In fact I have been driving it very nice trying to get better mileage but I can't get better than 12 and I do more than half highway driving. I noticed today that in 5th gear rpms are at 2000 does that sound normal for this car? Just trying to find out what the problem is. You guys got any ideas?

im calculating by miles and gallons used. right now i've got 100 miles exactly to a half a tank. Last tank I got just under 200 miles and used 17.6 gallons, calculates out to less than 12.

Something is wrong with your car. Get a vag.com on it and see if any codes are present. I have a V8 and get 15 city and 22 hywy. You should be getting 18 city and 25 hywy or somewhere close. 2000 RPM at hywy speeds (55-65 mph) is normal. I would get it checked. you are dumping fuel somewhere. Probably out the tailpipe. Are you sure you don't haveCEL on?

My 2.7T with an MT6 spins at 2700 rpm at 70 mph (3000rpm at 80). I get ~18 city and 22-23 highway, checked by math and not using the computer.
