Default Mystery Connector

While putzing around under the hood of my 99 A6 today, I noticed a wire that wasn't plugged into anything. After a bit more searching, I found the end of another wire that it's meant to plug into. I have no clue what this wire does or where it goes. I tried to follow it, but one end gets lost in the radiator support and the other end disappears into the left fender.

Does anyone know what this plug is supposed to do? I joined them together, and nothing obvious seemed to change when I took it for a drive.

This connector is for outside air temperature sensor G17 which is mounted to Power steering cooler @ front of radiator. Mine is currently open circuit that I haven't fixed, so can't say for sure what it does.
