Welcome and good luck with your search. Here's the best advise you can get: Read, search, read some more, and when you're just about to post a question, do a search and read some more.

Right now you're asking a REALLY general question that is almost impossible to get one's head around. It's been asked a million times and answered as many. The forum archives have all these questions and answers stored and waiting for you to find through the search function. To get you started, let me point you to some suggested readings for the car your looking at. Go to my signature and click on "My Registry Page." Scroll down to "Suggested Readings" and you'll find all sorts of great info: model guides, maintenance schedules, and "Stoney's Links" -- the ultimate A6 resource. Do some reading at these places and you'll get a good sense of what you're looking at (especially Stoney's Links). Once you've done this, you'll probably have some much more specific questions.

When you do, come back here and do a search to see if it's been asked before. If so, you may find that your question has already been answered. If not, you'll probably find some good background info to help you in phrasing the question you do need to post. We'll be here waiting to give you the highly valuable free advice you've earned by doing the above. :-)

Have fun! You're really getting into something you'll enjoy.

Default FWD versus Quatro

Well, you have to ask yourself what the conditions you are going to be driving in are most likely. Are you ever going to be driving in snow? If yes then Quatro, absolutely. In hard rain? If yes, then Quatro again.

The disadvantage of having quatro versus a front wheel drive is that you will get slightly lower milage (economy), and just maybe slightly higher maintenance costs.

You might also have a harder time finding a front wheel drive and not a quatro, at least in my state. It depends on where you live.

My personal opinion is this, unless you want the AWD Quatro system, why buy Audi at all? I really like driving my AWD and pushing its' handling, and in the snow it is should be even better. I really bought my '98 A6 (only available in quatro), to be a winter snow vehicle for when I can't ride my motorcycle and to keep the miles off of my pristine '91 Mercedes 300E Sportline. (I LOVE this car, I inherited it from my father 2 years ago with only 38K miles on it, and intend to give it to my daughter in nine years when she's 18 and graduates). I also own a '96 Isuzu Rodeo with part-time 4 wheel drive that I can use in the snow, but it gets really terrible gas milage. So I really just bought my A6 as a commuting and winter driving vehicle. However, the more I have driven my A6 in the last 5 months, the more I love that car too. Its handling is very crisp, it runs very smooth, and it is very comfortable for long distance and around town driving.

It also depends greatly on what year of an A6 you are looking to buy. Other than the new features available on the newer C6 models (2005 - present), I really don't like their looks. I also don't like the looks of the pre - '98 C4 models. My research led me to my '98 A6, which has a 2.8 liter motor (and had really low miles for a '98). While it is frankly a bit of a slug off of the line, this really isn't important to me. The 2.7 liter turbo motors and the 4.2 liter V-8 motors have much more power available. But for me, the documented reliability and longevity of the 2.8 L motor was important, as after all this is to be a commuting vehicle for me. On the highway, the 2.8 has plenty of power, its just getting off the line that is a bit slow. (If I want to go fast, I ride my motorcycle...I have yet to encounter a car that can compare to its power to weight ratio.)

You also have to consider that I am a die hard DIYer. I do all of my own work on every single thing that I own, especially vehicles. Its not that I can't afford to pay someone else to do it, I just prefer to do it myself and KNOW that it was done correctly. The fact that I do all my own work really offsets the cost of ownership for my cars, and thus I can afford to buy european cars. Over the years I have owned everything from VW's(several Beetles, a camper van, a GTI, a Scirroco and a Porsche 914) to a turbo Fiat Spyder 2000 (sold it to a girlfriend... god I loved that car and still miss it...can't remember what the girl even looks like), a V6 Peugot 505 (which I really regret having sold, but parts were getting hard to find), a Jaguar XJ-12 (good riddance!), a Triumph Spitfire (great car, but someone made me an offer I couldn't turn down), Mercedes (a 560 SEC that I really wish I had never sold, but I bought a boat with the profit, and my 300E), and now an Audi A6. I have also owned a couple of jap sports cars: two different RX-7s and a Miata. Typically I used to buy a used car with some issues, fix or restore it, drive it around for a while, then sell it for a profit and buy another. It was a nice hobby. (I've also owned a Jeep CJ-5 and Wagoneer, a Pontiac Formula Firebird, and an Isuzu Amigo). Please note the conspicous absense of BMW's, which is by choice -- too common, might as well buy a Chevy.

These days I am strictly into reliability and long-term ownership. I fully expect my Mercedes 300E to go over 500K miles. My Isuzu currently has over 180K miles and is still absolutely rock solid reliable. We'll see how my A6 holds up (65K miles currently, my wife and I have put over 12K miles on it in the last 5 months on road trips and commuting with absolutely no issues, knock on wood)....
