New Member, Just Bought and Audi A6 (Few Questions)
Hello-
My name is Matt, I just purchased a 2001 Audi A6 2.7t Quattro in absolute mint condition.
It is fully loaded with leather, sunroof, heated seats, memory seats etc. I picked it up for a steal from someone I went to high school with's parents. It has 101k on it. Brand new battery and new tires. I paid $1200 for it, I couldn't pass it up at this price.
I have had a few friends come to me, telling me I am driving a ticking time bomb with the timing chain. What is everyone here's opinion on this?
Thanks a lot in advance with your help. I am in love with this car and leaning towards keeping it as a winter driver.
Thanks,
Matt

The 2.7T has a timing belt, not a chain. If it's the original timing belt, then you are driving a ticking time bomb, so to speak. The change interval is below 100,000 miles so you're overdue. I would put that on the to do list within the next 3 to 6 months.
Also, inspect the valve cover gaskets while you're at it. These tend to start acting up around the 100k mark and are good to have done while the front end is torn apart.

This may indicate a clock spring / steering angle position sensor error. These are both located just behind the steering wheel. Do you feel / hear any rough plastic on plastic sounds from right behind the steering wheel when you make a turn?
Your best bet to verify whether or not you really need new brake pads and/or rotors is to pull the front wheels off and inspect the health of the rotors and the depth of the existing pads. The previous owner may simply think because the "BRAKE" light is on that the car needs brakes, which may not actually be the case.
You should have a shop familiar with Audi/VW products scan the car, or take the plunge and get your hands on the Ross-Tech software so you can do it yourself. With that age and miles, you'll be surprised how handy the Ross-Tech software really is.

I'm really impressed with how this thing handles in the snow.

djmattw - I would not wait 3-6 months for the timing belt job. It should be done around 80-90k and you have a 12 year old car. Those parts are old and worn. If the belt breaks, your engine is trashed. Find the $1-1.2k and have the job done right. The car will last a long time if proper maintenance is done. I'm at 220k on the third TB.

Right now it is too cold for me to work in the garage, I have no issues doing this myself and probably will. I currently have another daily driver (2011 Accord). I purchased this because the price is right and I have always been a fan of Audi's.
