Default New Turbo???

My local Audi dealer has identified my turbo problem as a 'seized wastegate'. They say this means a new turbo etc etc.

Is this the case?? Can a wastegate be un-seized??

Don't know if the wastegate can be "unseized," but if it is shot, it does indeed mean that you need a new turbo. The wastegate on the turbos of an A6 is actually an integral part of the turbo itself. Other, larger turbos have it as a separate component.

Is this under warranty?

Bugger!! I don't think it is actually seized > more sticky I think due to the fact that the turbo does work! the management system just cuts it out due to low pressure.

Not under warrenty either and Audi have quoted over £1400 for the job.

If you've lost boost pressure hang on a sec. LOTS to check before replacing turbos. Throttle body boot being the first place to look. F Hose is another (if you're pre 2001.5 model year). Check out Stoney's Links CLICK HERE for more info on loss of boost pressure, how to diagnose it, possible causes, and fixes. Let me do a little research on this and get back to you...

Xlnt - many thanks for your help. The car is a 2002 Audi A6 Avant Estate 1.9TD.

If that's your car in the pic you are one lucky fella!!

I tried getting more out of Audi re the wastegate but they seem very cagey?? They just repeat that the wastegate is blocked and I need a new turbo!!

Well, here's the outcome of my research... It could be a wastegate issue and, if it is, require the replacement of a turbo. That said, there are definitely other things that could cause a loss of boost pressure. We're talking about a sufficient amount of money here to merit taking the car to an independent garage (preferably one that is known to specialize in Audi and has a GREAT reputation) to get a second opinion. Check the appropriate regional forum here and at www.audiworld.com to see if you can find a highly recommended independent garage you can take the car to.

Good luck. Fingers crossed for you.

(Thanks for the compliments on my car -- yes, that's my baby)
