Ok, I had a mechanic listen to it from inside and he said it might be a U-joint.However, I just did some instense listening from the outside while someone held the brakes and it sounds like its coming form the passenger side/rear of the eninge. Does this info bring up any other ideas?

Ok I checked it out as best I could and I onyl hear the noise while standign in dirve at idle. It goes away ( or becomes inaudible) as soon as I start moving and I dont hear it under slow roll or deceleration. The torque converter might be the right idea, does the whole trans have to get pulled to check that out?

Yea, after my mechanic took a better listen he also said it was the torque converter. I spoke to another Audi owner who had the exact same problem and both agreed that it could be a defect in the converter itself causing it to be unbalanced, this was probably caused when it got rebuilt. I have not attempted to get it repaired, considering that there is no mechanical problem outside of the noise I dont think it warrants the labor involved in repalcing the tq.

There's a place in NJ that replaces the torque converter for a pretty good price, oil included. Wish I lived closer.
