Oil Capacity

Oil Capacity
I know this subject has been touched on plenty of times but I have a question. I read the manual and the car takes 6 quarts with my 2.7T. I have a 2001 A6. Anyway, I read some posts that say I could put in as much as 7.5.... here is the issue. I put in 4.5 quarts and it looks to me like the stick reads OVERfull. Impossible right?? I wiped it offa dozen times and reinserted it and it still come back looking full. I emptied the engine oil and the filter. I am worried because overfilling is really but but HOW CAN IT POSSIBLY BE FULL?? Seems like it should be LOW if anything. Should I worry?? I have about 6 quarts of Mobil1 in there now
thanks

RE: Oil Capacity
the problem is, the thing looks the same with 4.5 as it does now with 6quarts. Look totally saturated all over the orange gauge. I was planning on driving the car and then checking it again later. If the twin turbo can take 7.5 I should be low if anything right?

RE: Oil Capacity
My B5 S4 with the 2.7 takes exactly 6.5 quarts after oil changes and thats what i fill every 2.7 to when i service them. 7.5 qts would be the initial fill when the engine doesn't have any oil in it, like some will stay in the turbos and some on the bottom of the pan ect.

RE: Oil Capacity
Wow, looks like you never changed your oil before. When you drain your oil, replace your filter and put new oil back in, you may want to start the car first before checking your dip stick. Your always going to have the oil exceed the fill line if you don't. It takes about a 1/4 quart or so to fill the oil filter. After you start the car, check your dip stick and it should be back to normal.

Sheesh....tough crowd. Let him be - we all start somewhere don't we?
As to the issue at hand, you should fill it with 6 quarts to start with, then (on a level surface) run the engine for a minute or twoto let it saturate the filter and circulate. You could let it sit for a few minutes after that if you wish, but either way you should be able to check the oil level and it should settle down.
No matter what your result, I recommend checking the oil level again the next day - just as an added safety precaution.

RE: Oil Capacity
no, it's ok! I am a rookie. I have a built 77 scout and I can do anything on it! I made the rookie mystake with the tranny oil. My problem is solved. Total stupid moment. Drained all 12 QUARTS out of the motor now and put back 6.5 of mobil1. Now I just need to buy the stupid tool to get off the tranny pan fill plug and refill the pan. Quite an embarassing move really for someone like myself. I will not speak of it again! =)
