Oil change query
Totally agreed... including filter every change, as well
nemohm,
I'M confused. You say >end cap=stamped steel, ie, you won't use a cardboard endcap, but you question Chefro about the Audi-Mann 30,000km filter with cardboard endcap.
Do YOU trust the Audi-Mann, since you said to NEVER trust any other filter with cardboard endcap?
And, would YOU go 30,000km without a filter change? I sure as hell wouldn't!
Cheers,
George

While you have a point, there is also a counterpoint: reference.
It is not possible for one to experience everything in life. I never experienced for myself driving a car without oil, but somehow this is not somethng I would do myself or recommend anyone to attempt. Hence using a reference may be a good idea, especially if common sense also tilts that way.
Granted, everyone has an opinion and people take pride when other follow their lead.
Oops, I am sorry... we were talking about oil and filters.
Oil, I wish I knew, myself. Ask 10 people, 10 different choices, and each the very best. 'Bout the best I can offer is that a long time ago, Consumer Reports had a study of oils that said they were all about the same. Their main recommendation was to change religiously every, at that time, 3,000 miles. Reason: Oil is a long chain polymer, and constant squishing and clipping from pressure of sliding and rotating parts cut the chains, they lose their lubricating properties. Synthetics did no better, though at that time they cost about 5 times as much.
Today, with the price of a can of oil at 2.50 or more at the parts house, and synthetics about 5 bucks, buy what you want and change every 3,000, instead of the 5 to 7500 that the car makers are trying to tell you is "Recommended".
Oil changes are the cheapest insurance you can buy for your car.

On both my Audis and my BMW bike I change the synth oil about every 5-7k miles, sometimes even less depending on the lengths of my trips (I ride long distance and some of my trips easily go for 4-5 k miles before I go home).
I think that common sense, good products, and a bit of research can help you determine what the best cost/protection/pollution balance is for you.
Well Zippy, everything comes back to common sense as you pointed out.
You say I have a point, but then you have a point...etc, etc
I am not arguing (as I said before) quality. Maybe MANN filters are great...and the point is taken. Maybe Wix filters (first time when I heard of them - that doesn't mean they don't have quality) are great. That's wonderful to be aware of.
However, I was only sharing MY experience with FRAM filters, which to be truthful I didn't purchase out of a habit. For most my other cars I had/have I used SuperTech...yeah, cheap but good. I never had any problems with them as far as leakage or... "exploding" and sucked into the engine... LOL
My common sense tells me, just as yours, that filter companies play on your fears
, same as oil companies...
If I had good, positive experience with "cheap" filters why should I make some other manufacturer a big belly (spending more money than is needed) based on the same fear mongering you talk about?
Anyway, back to Fram. I could care less about this brand and it is far from me to endorse it in any shape or manner. What I had to say regarding this brand I already said it. It never neither leaked, nor have been sucked into the engine...
I ordered days back a MANN filter, even if it is + $ 10. I intended to add the pick my previous post, but I forgot.
Discriminating a product in favor of another is not my cookie... I just wanted to state that I had a positive experience with Fram filter on the Audi. If it is counted, that's fine. If it isn't accounted for, that's fine either...
Ultimately, however, I will not budge because of some "oil study" somewhere on Internet by a guy who doesn't even call it himself a study, with just a small sample of filters that he decided to reap apart ...
oh, forgot again....

It is a wrong assumption, but it is ok. What I had to say I pretty much said it in the previous post for Zippy.
Anyway, I will never tear apart a filter, no matter its brand so as far as I'm concerned I buy a filter based on the momentary mood or budget. For 3000 miles I believe most filters would do the same job.
As George said, I wouldn't run on unchanged oil for more than 3-4000 miles no matter if the oil companies play on my "fears" or not. The engine sure tells me every 3000 miles: "I love you, man!".
