Default ow-40 vs 5w-40

The owner's manual call for 0W-40, but it also said that if your area doesn’t sell 0w-40, then you could use 5w 30 or 40…..one of the 2. It’s hard to find 0W-40 in my area, so is it safe to use 5W-30 or 40? Like I said, the manual said either or, but is it really safe? Has anyone ever used 5W in their car?

If the manual says it is ok, I am sure it is fine.
