Default Pic's of 2.8. Engine, plz help

Hello Guys...

I have an 99 A6 Q 2.8 30v Avant.

Now Last week I had a massive oil leak from the Right Head (on Side of intake), in Area of the firewall. I have already replaced the valve cover gaskets.
Now some A* put some sort of Silicone there, lots of it....I can't see if there is any piping or cam seals behind the engine or what so ever... If anyone of u could maybe help me with pic's, Diagrams or sketches, so I would have an imagination of what's there.

I don't want to take of all the silicone cuz I'm not sure what they tried to cover. Just so i don't make things worse.I guess they did it before i bought it.

If someone Could post some pic's or maybe send then to my email (nemiz@hotmail.com) That would be really help full.

Thank you
Hope u have urself a nice day.

If its from the corner and its generally blue..its gasket sealer...nothing to worry about.

But, it would help if you could show a picture of how much they put on and so on...

hey

Thanks for ur quick responce.

Its not blue, its grey.

Its also obvious that they tried to stop the leak, just before i bought it....3 months later this happend...!! The oil Is leaking right from the area of the right heads corner, just below the valve cover gasket. Its dripping on the exhaust pipe and is burning.

I'm sorry I won't be able to provide anymore pic's until evening. 8pm Ca eastern time.

So did the shop replace your gaskets? Or did they just charge you for it and fill it with the goo?

The shop did it....
And I asked for the old valve cover gasket. I don't think they touched the goo....its just under the valve cover. Is there any plugs or pipes going there? I can feel with my hand that there is something, but am not sure what it is....Its hard to work on this High Tech engines without a manual....

I've found a pic... Its not the best picture and can't see in full detail...But that lil black part that is circeld, its most likely it. How would I replace it?

I recently had my cams seals replaced AGAIN. They were done 40k (1st owner) miles ago but the mechanic used hardening gasket sealer and of course they failed. Oh well..anyways.. to me I believe you have leaking cam seals/tensioner seals(?) based on your picture. Last week when it was freezing here in MN (oh wait it still is) I was driving to Blockbuster when I swore my car had started on fire. I pulled over and discovered that my cam seals/tensioner seals(?) were leaking onto my exhause manifold. After doing a little research I learned this is extremely common. What is more common is for them to dump oil when very cold. A day later when it was warmer out, it stopped dumping oil and continued to just seep it. I found a local audi tech who said he would do the hole job for $350.00 so I jumped at the chance. Sure beats squeezing into my one car garage with only a space heater on a -2 day for 5 hours. He changed the valve cover gaskets, cam seals, tensioner seals and I think thats it. He said he had 3 more Audis coming in throughout the week all with the exact same problem.

It is suppose to be a moderate diy, you just need a chain tensioning tool. If it wasn't so cold here I would have done the work myself.

Hey Jeff

I'm from Barrie Ontario Ca, near toronto. It also happend when it was really cold. I was on the highway going 140km/h when I suddenly saw lots of smoke coming out from all of the sides. I pulled over and saw oil just everywhere.

Its gotten a lil warmer here...and when i start up the car and let it warm up a bit....Oil is still leaking (not as much), and still smoking off the exhaust.

Now to change the back cam seal, do i need to go trough with all the processof timing belt taking off? Would u know how much just the seal costs? is there any site that could help me see how its done?

Thank you for your information!!!
