The power steering fluid from audi is mineral based and evaporates over time so you don't really have to flush it, just keep toping it off.

I wanted to drain the fluid for the purpose of adding clean new fluid. In Mercedes Benz cars, there is also a filter that one changes also. A couple of years ago, I also changed steering fluid in a 90 Volvo, the fluid was very dirty and discolored. My hope is that by changing the fluid, the hydraulicsystem will live a bit longer. I plan to get to 200k and hopefully beyond with my 97 Quattro, any thing I can do to achieve that needs to be done asap.

By the way, my local Audi dealer quoted $489 to flush the tranny!

Question, is there any fluids other than Audi fluids that can be used such as for brake, rear diff, for example?

The rear diff just uses syntheticCastrol 90 weight gear oil, nothing too special. You can pick that up at any store.
For the power steering i wouldn't stray from the factory mineral oil,i don't believe there is a drain for the power steering, if needed we will stick a tube down the resivior and vaccum out as much PS fluid as possible, top it off, then aerate the system by turning the wheel back and forth until the bubbles in the resivior are gone.
