my back passenger windows only open while I press the safety window switch...
if I leave the switch off or on, the back window won't open
any ideas how to fix this? it's 1998 A6 2.8

Sounds like the switch.

 

Had the same problem on our car. Back windows don't open unless you press in the safety switch. Switch was replaced by Audi agents. They replaced the whole switch in the driver's door. Relatively inexpensive. Cost R640. ($90).

 

mine does the same thing. i think the switch is supposed to lock in but mine stays up, fully extended. its kind of nice though. i dont have to worry about someone trying to dump their coffe out all down the side of my freshly washed car.
