Cool PowerSteering Question Need Help

So the past few weeks i have been hearing noise when i turn either which way in my 2005 A6 3.2, so today i took a sharp down hill turn into a plaza and the noise got really bad but then its slowly went away, when i got home i checked my fluid level and when i opened the cap it was dry not a drop in there. idk what to do am i checking it the right way?

p.s i just had my car serviced at audi last week shouldnt they top off all fluids?

You need to add fluid, if you can't see any, then that is not good. How you measure the level, I don't know on a C6. I would not drive the car with no fluid in the reservoir.

Keep in mind the fluid is Audi specific. If you put in regular power steering fluid, you will have to replace the rack.

Once you refill it, you have to chase down the source of the leak. Since you appear to be a "take it to the dealer" kind of guy, I would try your approach of complaining to the dealer that he was supposed to top off the PS fluid and he didn't and maybe he will do the inspection for free.

Good luck,

Bob

I had this same issue with my '05 4.2 twice. The dealer eventually tracked it down to loose pressure hose at the rack itself. Definitely need to use the Audi specific fluid.

In the Bentley service manual for '98 to '04 (A6 - RS6), it specifies Audi spec - G 002 000. But, as Bob stated, always check with the Audi dealership and keep the receipts just in case they make a mistake. . .
