putting a comp in the car
hey guys.
Do you think its a good idea to put a comp inside my A6?. I was going to put a comp in the trunk or under the passanger seat and plug it into the cigerrete lighter. Then i wanted to put a monitor somewere on the dash board

ello, er yes it can be done at it wont take that long, on my A6 i ripped out the built in sub behind side panel in boot and it now contains a 3.4ghz system which I wired into cd changer to play mp3's through sterio.
I made a panel up that sits where cassete holder once did down by hand break which holds main power switch for inverter, pc power switch, reset switch, pc speaker and power and hd led, ran the cables under the carpet to boot.
Ipicked up an 230v inverter which is mounted above wheel arch in boot coz I can't be arsed to pee around with psu on pc and wired via main switch to *** lighter socket as it has cont power supply. I made 5 inch screen up that sits on floor in front of passenger seat and it mounted on 1 of those portable cd player stands so when you lift it up u can bend it to where ever you want it.. If you like to fiddle more then you can mount screen in center console.
I actualy mounted usb port in screen housing so you don't have to keep going to boot if u wanna use flash drive and u can even plug car into it via vag leads. you dont need to use keyboard when set up but if you do get 1 of those flexible boards so u can just roll them up,
use cordless mouse, and mine set up for wireless so if you have access to wireless point u can surf net aswell.
another thing i done is on my boot lid there are 2 handles to open boot, i took one side out, got good web cam, stripped it down and mounted that there so u can see better when reversing and get closer to objects to get into tight spaces without relying on parking sensors.
I've done that lot and it works very well, only prob is sometimes when you surf net or plug vag in the text to small so u might need to use feature on windows that make everthing bigger.
I'm now mounting a 15" lcd on boot lid thats running i'm just making new facia panel for it to tidy it up.
all i'll say is make sure u got plenty of cables.
if you really wanna push it out and enjoy stuff like that fit a dvd drive in rear arm rest mount screens into headrests and wire into front mounted screen that will keep wife and kids quiet on long drive.
anymore info just shout
ENJOY

it's good there's no question of that, if car develops a prob theres no messing around with laptops and stuff, just plug it in and pres the button. i see your point if you wanna use it as a show item but i don't see it like that, i see it as a way keeping the family VERY quiet.and you will never have to mess around with muliti changer and dvd's ect.... just power it up tell it want you want and drive. Anyways if it's not amazing what would be amazing in your eyes?, i'm always looking for ideas for next project as long as it involes lots of fiddiling then i'm happy
I like to fiddle and tinker and it's the way i am.

lol well i am 18 so i dont really have a "family to keep quite" lol, but i see your point it wouldnt be just a show item, but a way to store a bunch of music, movies, files, etc..
just two questions
how would i plug the car's speakers to the computer?
and
Were can i find a long power button wire, so that i can put the comp in the trunk and have the power button by the driver seat? I know how ill do the CD rom, ill just use a USB CD rom

1st question
all i did to plug pc into speakers it to make cable up use a two way switch you can mount anywhere in car run pc out to1st and 2ndinput side of switch. cut phono leads from cd changer and solder the 2 common wires together and wire the 2 core to3rd and 4thinput of switch THEN wire the 2 output from switch to phono cable that runs to head unit. the idea is if you don't have a spare input on radio is flick switch to pc side so it cuts off cd changer output and then switch will let singal through from pc. sounds complicated but it only take half hour to do, hardest thing is where u wanna put switch. if you not getting sound out when done make sure volume is turned up on pc and make sure radio is in cd changer mode. if you have fitted sub and u put pc board where that was you might find that rear speakers in car won't work, if so shout and i'll tell you how to get around it
2nd question.. power switch/restet and led's, all i did for that was take that lot out from old pc tower unit mounted in perspex and just extend cables so you can put in front of car. there's not really any amperage in cables so 3 amp will be ok the actual cable i used is much like the ide data lead thats used on hard drives. cd-rom. u can use usb. i have cd writer in car but not plugged in as not use it except for initial setup of pc, i use usb pen drive for putting filmsmusic ect... on.
MAIN POINT TAKE NOTE. do as little cutting and swich fixing as poss, if done right and you decide to sell/change car you can take everything out put cut wires back to how they were. everything i've done is completley reversable without leaving holes anywhere in car
