Default Question about ignition swith R+R.

Is it possible to replace the ignition switch without removing the steering wheel on a 98 2.8 A6Q? I tried removing it yesterday and broke a socket trying to get the bolt loose. So right now it's either try replacing it without the steering wheel off or take it to the stealership.

Thanks.

No. You have to remove the steering wheel. How about just getting another socket and a breaker bar?

I used a breaker bar and it felt like it too was beginning to bend....almost like it was going to break off.

I thought that the ignition switch was on the dashboard on a 98 Audi and you could change the switch mechanism without removing the steering wheel. There are two parts of the switch -- the mechanical part with the steering wheel and auto trans lockout and the electrical part that has the contacts. But I might be wrong

NO, I didn't because I was afraid of getting something electrical wet. I guess I could try some PB Blaster on it and let it soak for a couple of days...try again next weekend.

What liquid penetrate did you have in mind?
