Real life gas mileage?
Hey guys, new to the club and currently pretty much set on getting a 00-04 A6. Its either gonna be the 3.0Q or 2.7Q, I'd kinda rather have the reliability of the 3.0, but the 2.7 seems to be funner even with the turbo related problems. I test drove the FWD and quattro's, and yeah not going with FWD at all haha. The 4.2 is amazing (test drove a 03 S6!!) but it seems to be a bigger gas hog.
I live in Houston now, my work area is about 10-20 miles from my apt so except for long trips to the parents, all my driving will be in city. What do the A6's get as far as city mileage goes? I'm not all that worried about highway mpg since I'll be driving much less at those speeds. I've seen some posts saying they got high teens in the city, but just looking for some other opinions.
My current car is a 2002 Impala, its gets around 20mpg in city and high 20s on the highway which is not bad for a large car, but I am willing to sacrifice some mileage for the comfort, style, and performance of the A6 haha
Thanks in advance!

I only get in the high teens driving in Los Angeles.
MPG gets a lot better on the highway, but in stop-n-go traffic it is a guzzler. This car takes a lot of gas to get momentum, but once you get rolling you can watch the computer readout giving you a higher and higher gas mileage.

I've tracked actual mpg over the last 80k miles. I do mostly highway at 70-75 mph and return about 23-24mpg. City seems to be high teens to v low 20s. I tend to accelerate gently but drive fast, if that makes sense.
My daughter's A4 3.0 gets about 25-26 under the same highway conditions, but it's ~400 lbs lighter I think. City seems the same or maybe a little worse.

Driving:
50 mph = 28 mpg
60 mph = 26 mpg
70 mph = 22 mpg
City = 17 mpg
Average every tank for the last 2 years = 23
I drive 80% hwy consisting of 55mph and 65mph with a few stop lights to and from work over a 27 mile commute each way. I accelerate moderately out of stoplights and keep my car in good working order.
It seems all AWD vehicles get around 24 hwy. My father in laws outback gets around 22 he says, the Taurus AWD gets 24 (epa), 325ix ~ 24.. and so on.

01 4.2
city with ac in summer/traffic = 16mpg
hwy with ac = 21mpg
I average about 22-23mpg with my 4.2 with a 50/50 mix. On a recent road trip down to Atlanta from Chicago, I got 29mpg. The 4.2 can be a hog in traffic, but overall its not that bad. Keep in mind though 4.2/S6 have a 22 gallon tank. 4.2 is pretty bulletproof compared to the 2.7t and much more fun than the 3.0.

'00 2.7t with tiptronic and 87,000 on the clock
I drive 2-miles to work. 2-miles back.
rarely highway driving.
around town with the limited warmup time (which plays a large role) nets me about 16mpg just around town.
when I ride the highway, I have no problem hitting and maintaining 27mpg (24mpg with the windows all down)
A trip from my house in the burbs, to my mother's house in minneapolis. 50% highway, 50% city puts me around 24mpg round-trip at about 48miles total.
