Rearview Mirror

RE: Rearview Mirror
actually i think it is a bit tricky. when i bought my 98 A6 a guy cleaning the car broke the mirror, and since it was not an audi dealer they gave a credit. i thought about doing it myself and the service manager advised against it. he said it is possible crack the windshield if not done correctly. it was a slow night so he said if i just wait around when a tech has a few minutes he would put it in a no cost. even if they charge you it should be 1/2 hour of labor.
i would wonder if there is a power supply there if you don't already have a factory dimming mirror? maybe it runs up to the front of the headliner? if so you would have to release the headliner to get at the power supply.

RE: Rearview Mirror
It is actually pretty easy. All you need to do is rotate the mirror's "neck" 90 degrees to the left, and it pops off. I used a pair of pliers coated with a microfiber towel to protect the plastic from marring.
Here is a tech article on the compass mirror upgrade, but you can at least see how to remove the mirror:
Mirror removal
For auto-dimming, you'll have to run power and ground to the mirror, but I do not have any info on that. Sorry.

RE: Rearview Mirror
Thanks for all of your help. Does anyone know if Audi installs the wiring even if you do not have a dimmable mirror? I know that when I look in the trunk that there is cabling for the mobil phone even though this option is not installed.
