I was thinking of replacing the front shocks on my 96 avant untill i looked closer at the job. It looks like the front shock and wheel hub unit are all the same piece. has anyone gone and done this and what am I up against?

Strut insert...

 

The strut insert may be removed, per instructions in the BentleyPublishers.com Audi shop manual CD, with the car resting on it's wheels. However, the special tools mentioned in these instructions are not locally available at most auto parts stores.
