Default Rolling back when in drive

I have just bought a6 1.9 tdi se on a 03 plate 6 speed auto, i had to stop on a hill so i put my foot on the brake then took my foot off to set off again and the car rolled backwards about 3 feet so i had to use the hand brake,when im on flat surface or a small incline its ok can any one help not had the car a week yet thanks .

Something like this actaully happens to me too. I was parking on a hill and accidentally shut the car off in reverse, i started to step out and the car started rolling. IIRC the car should be able to roll anywhere while in gear but maybe im wrong. Was the car still runnign when this happened to you?

this is very common. so you should always use hand brake when ithe car is inclined upward. engine should be powerful.

If you understood how an auto transmission worked, you would understand that this is nothing to worry about. Now of course if you are in park, then worry about it.

not in park just in drive on a hill with no throttle will roll back so is that ok then.

Well, at 18 degrees, it'll prolly happen but it shouldnt be dramatic.
