Secondary air pump full of water
I was under my A6 yesterday (changing the roll bar drop links), when I noticed that the secondary air pump was hanging off; two of the three mountings had snapped.
When I removed the electrical plug, water ran from inside the motor, hmmm!
OK, I think I understand why. One of the combi valves fails allowing hot gas into the pump. Condensation builds up to the point where the motor rusts and seizes (I've never heard it running since I bought the car last year).
My question is what to do about it. Buying new parts is out of the question for a 10 year old car, and my local scrappies don't have any.
Is there any point in replacing them? Worrying about the high emissions for the first few minutes seems kinda pointless when I'm driving a gas-guzzling 4.2 litre behemoth!
If I don't replace the pump, do I need to blank off the combi valve ports, or is it sufficient to join the two pump air hoses together?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers
Andy
