My Grandsons 2000 audi a6 2.8L had the same oil leak. After removing the crankshaft timing belt sprocket i found the front main seal setting just outside of the housing. Everything I have read is that if the crankcase ventilation system is plugged or not working properly, the crankcase pressure can make these seals leak or even pop them out of place.
