Seriously wanting an A6
How did the head gasket do on your Range Rover?
'01s had issues with a seal in the torque converter, but more so in the 2.7 and 4.2, so that is something to be aware of. Ask about brakes, suspension components, oil leaks, secondary water pump, coil pack and coolant reservoir. Ask to inspect area under battery and look for clogs.
The price is historically high but used car prices have gone up recently (a normal phenomenon after a recession) so it is a relative function. As long as you feel you got a good deal and the seller thinks he got a good deal, its a good deal no matter what the armchair crowd says.
Good luck,
Bob Martin

80k is low mileage and the timing belt work should be done around now, not at 40k. I would look into that. I'm at 188k and just had my second TB done earlier this year. I would find out if differential and brake fluids, and all filters have been changed recently, and check condition of brakes, rotors, tires. Tranny and cats would be the big ticket items, but I don't think they are that unreliable and the 2.8 is underpowered and does not put the stress on the tip that the 2.7T or 4.2 do. Otherwise you might expect wear items like shocks and control arms. Face it, 10 year old vehicles are sold cheap because things are constantly wearing out and regular maintenance is needed. Figure on $1-2k/year unless you have DIY skills. PS - Check all accessories, controls, windows, etc for proper operation. Look for water leaks from sunroof.
This is great stuff! Thanks guys....I will be sure to check all the things you have listed....my BMW was underpowered as well, I am not going to hot rod it around so I am not worrIed....I just didn't want to get a car that was going to have a new tranny, I know it's hard to tell, right away.....
Let me ask this question, I found an 02 2.7t for sale for 7995 it has 92000 on it....should I be jumping on the 2.7 or the 2.8 ( I am not looking for racing power...just reliability )....thanks!!

If you are not concerned with power or performance, the 2.8 can be a reliable engine and does not have the added risk of turbos. Failed turbos will set you back $3k. Mine are leaking slightly, which means they may be failing, but I am also at 188k miles so I kind of expect they may have to be replaced someday. But I suggest you drive both so you can make an informed decision.

I just got done driving her, and the acceleration is similar to my 5 series BMW, so that is not something that concerns me. You say tranny problems, all I can find on the forum is people that have had them go wrong, is this a traditionally common problem with the 2.8 quat? DIY is something I always consider first, whether or not I can actually get the job done is another thing, but I have been pretty successful on other luxury cars....thanks for the time that you have spent on here with me. It is greatly appreciated,
BTW the guy at the shop that is selling it has quoted me 9400.00 because that is what NADA has said...I don't think I will be getting into for more than 8,400.00 though as I feel I could find another one for about that. Especially after you have told me that I could do one for about 8000. THANKS!
