If the car hasn't had the belt done, I would highly recommend it. My local shop charges $800 for it and they do very good work. I would never have something like that done at the stealership.
Suggest you check out the appropriate regional forum here and on www.audiworld.com to find out who the good independent mechanics in your area are. Get quotes from them. When you have this done, be sure to also replace the water pump, pulleys, & tensioners at the same time. Those parts of the timing belt loop are actually more likely to fail than the belt itself. www.purems.com has a complete kit you can buy.
I also live in Seattle....I would go talk to Jim at German Auto Clinic in Ballard. I took my A4 and my A6 to him for repairs. He is a straight shooter and tells you like it is--no BS. He has a ton of experience and is realistic in price. There is also FAT CITY on 5th AVE downtown. These guys know their stuff and are trained to the max on high end German Cars but they cost a bit more. This would be my recommendations.
