Default spark plugs changed, now wont start

Hey everybody, i just changed plugs and plug wires(also had to change left side valve cover gasket), and now the car wont start. It made a clicking noise but did not turn over. I replaced wires one at a time so i wouldnt get them mixed up. Any suggestions? 1999 a6 quattro. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a dead battery

changed battery(it was dead), started but ran horrible (stuttering at approx 500 rpm idle). 2 possible scenarios: 1.) plugs are not plugged into correct coil (I was very careful replacing them one at a time, but if anyone has a diagram or picture, that would be great). i have the bentley manual, but it only shows drawings of the 2.7t, where i have the 2.8. 2.) on the left side cylinder head cover, the sensor that plugs into it, the tube snapped where it crosses the engine. i have noidea what this is, but will try to elecrical tape it to get it running properly. any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My first thought is you need to do a throttle body adaptation.(sp) Start the car a few more times if you don't have a vag-com and see if it clears itself up. I believe the tube you are talking about is part of the breather system, mine was cracked for a long time and when I finally fixed it, it didn't seem to make any difference. Well except for the oil smell in the cabin went away.

When the battery is disconnected/dead for a while you have to readapt your throttle. I assume that all C5 A6 2.8l engines use drive by wire. If you have an actual throttle cable I don't know if you need to do the adaptation.

Find a vag-com if you don't have one. Also I assume all the wires are secure and you put wire 1 to cylinder 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3.....

i am continuing to crank the car and let it run for a few minutes. It seems to bounce around at idle between 500 and 250 rpms. thoughts? Thanks.

I found the engine layout stamped under the coils, it is different than what you have in your post. I can take a picture, but how would i attach it to this post?

i see what you're sayin, but stamped right in front of the coil pack, is:

5 4 6
3 2 1
i am going to take pics in a while.
that is neither here nor there, any ideas why this car wont idle?
