Default Starter issues for 99 Audi A6 Quattro?

This is kind of a multi-part question. My A6 Quattro wouldnt start this morning, it wouldnt even turn over. I am fairly sure its not the ingnition switch, because I have had trouble with that before, my lights and AC went out before and I replace the ingnition switch and fixed the problem. This is different. When I turn the key in the ignition, I hear a chunk or a clunk sound and nothing else. Its almost as if it turns over just one time, and than stops. Now I'm confused because I think it might be the starter, but whenever starters have gone out in my previous cars, there has just been a continous clicking sound.

Is there any way to tell if its the starter without ripping apart my car or taking to a shop?

My second part of the question is that if it is the starter, would it be possible to change it out myself, or would I have to take it to a shop? I have limited experience repairing and fixing cars, but I am very intuitive and once I start something I dont stop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Default A little extra information

I just wanted to add some information that might help in the diagnosis. A few days before my Audi wouldn't start, I noticed a regular clicking sound coming from under the hood while my car was running and in idle. It started fine than and idled fine also, just had an intermitant clicking noise coming from under the hood that I hadnt noticed before. I hope this helps.
