Default Taking off the gear shift face plate

My girlfriend recently spilled a full soda in my '04 A6. I've pretty well cleaned up the radio and everything, but the gear shift is still sticking when going between "park" and "drive." I want to take the face plateoff of the gear shift to make sure all of the soda is cleaned up, but I wanted a little direction before I start trying to take the whole center console apart and wind up breaking one of the platic pieces. It doesn't seem like I can go right to the gear shift, more like I need to start at the back of the center console and work my way towards the gear shift. Is this right? Will I need any custom tools from Audi to pull this off? Or, is it best to just leave this alone?
