Default removing silver plate surrounding gear shift

How hard would this be to do? There are a bunch of scratches on it and I want to take it off and get it brushed. The dealer said he didn't know but it could cost a bunch of labour.

Also there are a few scratches in the wood trim. Is there any products I can use to try and get them out? Has anyone every painted the wood trim?

First, remove the shift surround

Next, shift into 4 (or S if you have 2002+), use a plastic putty knife to push the metal collar down away from the bottom of the shift ****. Once that is seperated, pull the ****'s button out so that there is about 1/4 inch gap on the bottom of the button, and lift up HARD!.. Watch your face...don't hit yourself!

Then look at the shift bezel, you should see two tabs on each side of the metal plate. Using a plastic putty knife, GENTLY pry the tabs loose, and lift the bezel out. If you can, seperate the electronics panel from the bexel, but if you cannot seperate the panel, simply remove the wire connector that is under the shifter's circuit panel.

I used medium grit sandpaper on a firm block to remove the clearcoat and start the brushed finish, and gradually worked my way to a fine grit. Make sure you go in one direction only when you are close to finishing. Here is the one from my last car, done...

Those wood trims have a plastic type cover on them. I would try a plastic polish.

You can also use a carnuba wax to polish up the wood trim...it works well on the scratches.

eBay Germany about $500 for complete setup. I had to spend another $100 to get the shift trim milled out for the 2001 shifter (PRND432 vs PRNDS from the 2003 RS6). New, this stuff goes for about $1500-2000.

A guy on AudiWorld has a set for sale or trade for S4 wheels, asking $500 but it is missing one piece under the armrest. Probably about $150 to replace that one piece.carbon fiber trim for A6
