We are trying to access the TCM on a 2001 Audi A6 Quattro 2.7L AWD, It is posted that it is located under the carpet in front of the front passenger seat. That we need to remove the kick panel and pull back the carpet to be able to reach in and take it out. The carpeting appears to be all in one piece and cannot be pulled back to reveal the TCM.

We will appreciate any information on how to locate the TCM.

The Carpet is one giant piece - you are correct. It's a PITA to remove because you have to remove all the trimming pieces by the doors, center console and what not if you ever have to remove the entire carpet (don't ask how I know that :P).
However if you simply have to remove the TCM - it's not that painful. Here is an excellent article for your reference:

Sheldon, 'Thanks for the response'. With much effort and brute strength my husband was able to get the TCU out. As you indicated, he used a 2x4 as an extra hand. The old saying is so true: 'It there is a hard way to do it, the Germans can figure it out'. Your picture tutorial was excellent.
